Abstract

Purpose: This ethnoscience aimed to construct the decisional model on health care seeking behaviors.

Methods: This study was guided by the assumptions of the culturalism. Research question posed to data collection and analyzing was "Based on what rules do the participants make a decision to select and comply with treatment modalities for weight control?" Data were collected from 4 over-weight women and 2 men between December 2006 and March 2008. Participants observation and unstructured interviews were conducted during a 3~6 month weight control program. Modified TOTE model was adopted for the flow and decision analysis.

Results: Decisional behaviors were categorized as function-focused and relation-focused. Some participants selected the program and the facility because they had a private relationship with the health personnel. For the participants, attending the program was a means to enhance the relationship with the personnel. They complied with all modalities that were recommended by their therapist whether it had an effect or not. For others, attending the program was a means to make his or her body slim and keep their health. In this case, they made outcome-oriented decisions.

Conclusion: Participants" decisions on treatment modalities followed their own rules of behavior. Health personnel need to understand the patterns for clients" behavior to enhance compliance with a treatment program and thereby promote health status.
